WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE JUMP STARTING YOUR CAR
Jumper cables are one of those essential items every driver
should have in his or her trunk. You never know when you'll forget to turn off
your headlights or do something else to cause your battery to go dead.
Most times, you can jump-start a dead battery and get at
least enough energy to drive home or to a service station. Done properly, this
is a fairly simple task. But many car owners don't know how to jump-start a car
battery safely. Each year, unsafe jump-starts cause many Americans to suffer
serious eye injuries from auto battery accidents.
Car batteries contain sulfuric acid and produce hydrogen and
oxygen gases. If you don't jump-start a battery properly, you can cause the
battery to explode. If the gases come in contact with a spark, flame or lit
cigarette, the battery can explode, sending battery parts and acid flying.
Wait! Don't Jump!
Before you try to jump-start your car, or use your car to give someone else a jump, check your owner's manual. Some new cars have specific instructions or prohibit jump-starting.
If the battery is cracked and liquid is leaking out, do not try to jump-start it. The battery is no longer good and if you try to jump-start it, it will explode. Similarly, do not try to jump-start a battery if your car's fluids are frozen; an explosion could occur.
Also make sure your jumper cables are rust- and corrosion-free and have no exposed wires. And wear a pair of polycarbonate goggles with the designation Z-87 on the frame.
Ready to Jump
If the battery is suitable for jump-starting:
Line both cars up so the batteries are as close as can be. Make sure the cars are in park, are turned off, and are not touching each other. Make sure all lights, signals, radios, and fans are off.
Locate the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of both batteries. The batteries should be clearly marked.
Clean off any corrosion around the dead battery's terminals with a wire brush. Corroded posts
prevent the power from getting through the cables and into your battery.
To attach the jumper cables correctly:
1. Clamp one cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. Don't let the positive cable touch anything metal other than the battery terminal.
2. Connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
3. Connect one end of the negative (-) cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
4. Connect the other end of the negative cable to metal on the engine block on the car with the dead battery. Don't connect it to the dead battery, carburetor, fuel lines, or moving parts.
5. Stand back and start the car with the good battery.
6. Now start the stalled car.
7. Remove the cables in reverse order as to how you attached them.
Drive the car for 30 minutes so the alternator can recharge the battery.

Fatigue? Don't drive tired
Fatigue is often ranked as a major factor in causing road crashes although its contribution to individual cases is hard to measure and is often not reported as a cause of crash. Driver fatigue is particularly dangerous because one of the symptoms is decreased ability to judge our own level of tiredness.
Fatigue is more likely to be a factor in crashes in rural
areas as they can involve long trips and extensive periods of continuous
driving, however anyone can be affected by fatigue.
If you don't get enough sleep you go in to sleep debt and
you owe yourself more sleep. The only way to repay this debt is by sleeping.
Until you catch up on your sleep, you will have a greater risk of having a
fatigue related crash.
Your eyelids droop and your head starts to nod. Yawning
becomes almost constant and your vision seems blurry. You blink hard, focus
your eyes and suddenly realize that you’ve veered onto the shoulder or into
oncoming traffic for a moment and quickly straighten the wheel. This time you
were lucky; next time you could become the latest victim of the tragedy of
drowsy driving.
- Research suggests that almost 20% of accidents on major roads are sleep-related
- Sleep-related accidents are more likely than others to result in a fatality or serious injury
- Peak times for accidents are in the early hours and after lunch
- About 40% of sleep-related accidents involve commercial vehicles
- Men under 30 have the highest risk of falling asleep at the wheel
Signs of fatigue include:
- constant yawning
- drifting over lanes
- sore eyes
- trouble keeping your head upright
- delayed reactions
- daydreaming
- difficulty remembering driving the last few kilometres
- variations in driving speed.
Most importantly if you feel tired, pull over and have a
powernap, otherwise you may experience microsleeps which are dangerous while
driving. Once you are fatigued the only cure is to stop and take a break.
THINK! Advice
- Plan your journey to include a 15-minute break every two hours.
- Don't start a long trip if you're already tired.
- Remember the risks if you have to get up unusually early to start a long drive.
- Try to avoid long trips between midnight and 6am when you're likely to feel sleepy anyway.
- If you start to feel sleepy, find a safe place to stop - not the hardshoulder of a motorway. Drink two cups of coffee or a high-caffeine drink and have a rest for 10 to 15 minutes to allow time for the caffeine to kick in.
- Remember, the only real cure for sleepiness is proper sleep. A caffeine drink or a nap is a short-term solution that will only allow you to keep driving for a short time.

DRINK&DRIVE:I SHOULD HAVE DIED THAT NIGHT
I went out with my friends, and my whole life changed. My
friend was taking me home when he crashed into a bridge not even five minutes
from the bar. He was four times the legal alcohol limit. I have no recollection
of the crash--all I remember is leaving the bar, and the next thing I know, I'm
in a hospital. I fractured one hip and dislocated the other, lost three front
teeth, and fractured my jaw. They had to wire my jaws, and I had to stop going
to school, delaying my chances of graduating from college.
“I should have died that night.”
I was unable to move for a week and was on crutches for
three months. I am slowly getting back to normal through physical therapy,
though I will have jaw surgery and braces. I should have died that night, but I
didn't. I will never take life for granted.

A TRUE LIFE STORY: DRINKING & DRIVING
I went to the party and remembered what you said. You asked
me not to drink alcohol. So I drank a Sprite. I felt proud of myself, as you
said I should feel. You said I should not drink and drive, contrary to
what some friends told me. I made a healthy choice and your advice was correct,
as all you give me forever.
When the party finally ended, people began to drive without being able to do so. I went to my car with the certainty that he would return home in peace. I never imagined what awaited me, Mom. Now I'm lying in the street and I hear the policeman say: "The kid that caused this accident was drunk." Mom, his voice seems so distant. My blood is spilled everywhere and I'm trying with all my might not moan. I can hear the doctors say, "This girl is going to die." I have the certainty that the young man, who ran at full speed, decided to drink and drive, and now I have to die.
Why do people do this, Mom, knowing that this is going to ruin many lives? The pain is cutting me like a hundred knives. Tell my sister not to cry, tell Daddy to be strong. And when I go to heaven, I'll be watching for you all. Someone should have taught that boy, its wrong to drink and drive. Maybe if his parents would have said, I would not be dying now. My breath is getting weaker, more and more. Mom, these are my last moments and I feel so desperate. I wish I could hug Mom, while I'm lying here dying. I wish I could tell you how much I love you, Mom. So .. I love ... y. .. goodbye ... "

Wheel alignments. Why are they so important?
Wheel alignments. Why are they so important? Why should you spend more money on this service when you buy a set of tires?
The simple answer is, because you don't want this to
happen to your N10,000+ set of tires within a few months:
See the right side of the picture? That shiny stuff? That's the steel belts that are part of the inside of the tire. You are not supposed to see that. Ever. See how deep the tread is on the left side of the picture? If this vehicle were aligned properly, the tread on the right side of the picture would be the same as the left.
So ensure you go for a wheel alignment often to prolong your tire life.
How To Check Your Tires For Signs Of Wear And Tear
Responsible car owners must check
their tires for signs of wear and tear at least once a month. In addition, they
must also inspect their tires before and after they go on a long road trip. In
doing so, the car owner will be able to determine whether they need to buy new
tires, have their wheels aligned, or change their driving habits.
How To Inspect Your
Tire Treads
The tire tread is the outline on
the rubber circumference of the tire which is in constant contact with the
road. The tread enables the best response time for stopping, speeding, turning,
and stopping the car. They are designed with deep groves known called sipes.
These groves pull water away from the tread so that it is always in contact
with the road and prevent hydroplaning. If it is in excellent condition, it
will quicken the response time and accuracy; thus ensuring your safety while on
the road.
For this reason, it is essential
to take the time to inspect your tire treads for any signs of wear. Tires that
have lost their tread are very dangerous as this increases your risk of getting
into an accident. Some states even issue a citation for having such tires. It
is essential to check your car frequently and make sure that the tires still
have adequate tread. Here are some signs of wear and tear you need to watch out
for:
- Both edges are worn out:
When you observe that both the edges of the tread are worn, it is due to underinflation. The best way to address this problem is to add more air to your tires. It is also essential to check for any leaks.
- One-sided wear:
This type of wear is due to poor tire alignment. The best remedy for this problem is to have your wheels re-aligned.
- Worn out center treads:
The tire treads will have worn out centers if the tires are overinflated. To address this problem, you need to let some air out according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Uneven worn out treads with scallops and bald spots: This usually happens when the wheel is imbalance or if it is not aligned properly. The best thing you can do is to balance the wheel and align them.
- Only the edges of the front tires are worn out: This happens when you usually take curves too fast. The best solution to this tire problem is to slow down.
It is advisable to inspect your tyres on a monthly basis,
for tread wear and damage. If you find serious cuts, or nails and other foreign objects
embedded in the tyre, have the tyre repaired or replaced immediately. Even wear
across the whole thread is to be expected, but be on the lookout for irregular
wear

REPLACING ONLY TWO TYRES?
Normally you should buy four tires at a time for an
automobile but not everyone can afford to change all four tyres at once. So the
next best thing is to change two tyres on either the front or rear axle. Most
people think that the sensible thing is to change the front tyres before the
rear tyres.
I recently found myself in that situation. The mechanic at
the dealership told me to put the front tires to the rear and put the new tires
on the front. It made sense when he said it but, as it turns out, it’s not the
correct thing to do.
When replacing only two tyres, the correct thing to do is put the new tires on
the rear of the car with the older tires on the front of the car – it prevents
fish-tailing during a rainstorm.
You don't have control over your back tyres, so you want your
best tyres at the back when entering corners on a wet road. The greater tread
depth in the back helps maintain control in wet and slippery conditions. The front
tyres can be controlled/steered.
The picture below says it all.

Sports $2,400,000. This is by far the most expensive street legal
production car available on the market today (the base Veyron costs $1,700,000).
Capable of reaching 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, the Veyron is the fastest street
legal car when tested again on July 10, 2010 with the 2010 Super Sport Version
reaching a top speed of 267 mph (430 km/h). When competing against a Bugatti
Veyron, you better be prepared!
3. Aston
Martin One-77 $1,850,000. The name "One-77" says it all:
beauty and power in One, limited to 77 units. With 750 hp, it is able to go
from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds with a maximum speed of 220 mph (354 km/h).

Lamborghini ever built takes third place on the list. It reaches 60 mph in 3.3
seconds from 0, to go with a top speed of 211 mph (339 km/h). Its rare (limited
to 20) and slick design are reasons why it is expensive and costly to own.
5. Maybach Landaulet $1,380,000. The Landaulet is
the most expensive sedan on the market and it can go from 0-60 mph in 5.2
seconds. It is one the most luxurious cars ever made, this comes with a

7. Hennessey
Venom GT Spyder $1,100,000. What makes the 2013 Hennessey Venom
GT Spyder is its price tag, a compelling 1.1 million dollars. There is no other
convertible in the world today that can match-up with this car. Not to mention
that it goes from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
8. McLaren F1 $970,000. In
1994, the McLaren F1 was the fastest and most expensive car. Even though it was
built more than 15 years ago, it still has an unbelievable top speed of 240 mph
(386 km/h) and reaching 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Even today, the McLaren F1 is
still top on the list and outperforms other supercars.
9. Ferrari Enzo $670,000. The
most popular supercar ever built. The Enzo has a top speed of 217 mph (349
km/h) and able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Only 400 were produced

Pagani Zonda C12 F is the 8th most expensive car in the world. It promises to
deliver a top speed of 215 mph (346 km/h) and go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

called "Dream Cars" because you may never even see them. The good
news is that even if you can't afford the whole car we can at least sell you

Toyota Highlander Overview
A pioneering vehicle in many
ways, the Toyota Highlander was one of the first midsize crossover
sport-utilities to be sold in America when it debuted in 2001. With its carlike
unibody design, the original Highlander provided a variety of benefits over Toyota's
more traditional SUVs, such as better handling, less cabin noise, improved
crashworthiness and easier entry and exit for passengers.
Since then, the Highlander has
gone on to become one of the most popular crossovers available, appealing to
shoppers who want a vehicle with SUV styling, plenty of cargo-carrying
versatility and carlike driving characteristics. The second-generation
Highlander is larger and roomier than the older model, but a Highlander of any
vintage will be one of the better values out there for those who need a
comfortable, easy-to-drive vehicle that can carry a fair amount of cargo,
handle occasional snow and ice during the winter months and still turn in
adequate fuel economy.
The present Toyota Highlander
represents the second-generation model, which was introduced for 2008. It's
significantly bigger than the previous model in nearly every way, adding
shoulder room, hiproom and legroom all around as well as additional cargo
capacity. It also has a more powerful V6 engine and other new features.
The tyre sizes of Highlander
model 2013-2008 is P245/65R17
The first-generation Toyota Highlander
was produced from 2001-2007. It was powered by either a 155-hp four-cylinder
engine or a 220-hp 3.0-liter V6

CAR TYRE DAMAGE TOP TIPS
- Check your car tyres for damage regularly
- Make sure you check each tyre for cracks, cuts, bulges and sharp objects
- Tyres with lumps or bulges might be suffering from internal damage, and should be brought to the attention of a car tyre expert
- Any cut that looks about 2 1/2cm deep might have reached the internal structure of the tyre, and should be checked by a tyre expert
- Groups of small cracks called 'crazing' are a sign of tyre aging, and indicate it's probably time to get replacements
- If a sharp object is found embedded in the tyre, take the car to an expert and they will advise on whether a new tyre is required
- If you do discover any damage at all, it's probably worth fitting the spare tyre just to be on the safe side before taking the car to an expert
- Most car tyre retailers offer a free tyre check service without an appointment. If the tyre is not wearing evenly, it could be a sign the wheels are not aligned which will need correcting

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE RAIN
The raining season is here again and here are some few rain driving tips.
Please read and share, you might be saving a life by doing so. These tips
will keep you and your passengers safe on wet roads.
- Routinely check your tires…
Always check your tires before you hit the road. Make sure
you do the following routine maintenance:
Keep your tires properly inflated. The correct air pressure
for your tires is specified by the vehicle manufacturer and can be found on the
vehicle door edge, door-post, and glove box door or fuel door. It is also
listed in the owner's manual. The number listed on the side of the tire is not
the recommended air pressure for your tire – it is the maximum air pressure for
the tire. You should check your tire's air pressure at least once a month.
Check the tires tread depth. Proper tread depth will help
prevent skids and aquaplaning.
- Slow down.
- Know how to recover from a skid.
Skids can happen even to the most cautious drivers. If your
car does skid, remember not to slam on the brakes. Do not pump the brakes if
you have an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Instead, apply firm, steady
pressure to the brakes and steer the car in the direction of the skid.
- Keep your distance from the car ahead.
Wet-weather driving demands gentle use of all the main
controls – steering, clutch, brake and accelerator – and a larger allowance for
errors and emergencies. When you begin a journey in rain, your shoes will be
wet and can easily slip off the pedals. Scuff the soles on the rubber matting
or carpeting of the car before you start the engine. All motorists should
regularly check that their headlights, rear lights, brake lights and turn
indicators are working properly. It takes about three times longer to break on
wet roads than on dry roads. Since more distance is required to brake, it is
important not to tailgate. Keep a little more than two car lengths between you
and the vehicle in front of you.
- Drive in the tracks of a car ahead of you.
Avoid using your brakes. Whenever possible, slow down by
taking your foot off the accelerator.Turn your headlights on, even in a light
rain. Not only do they help you see the road, but they'll help other drivers
see you. If your car has daytime running lights, you should turn them on, so
vehicles behind you can see you better.
- Prepare for your journey.
Wet-weather driving demands gentle use of all the main
controls – steering, clutch, brake and accelerator – and a larger allowance for
errors and emergencies. When you begin a journey in rain, your shoes will be
wet and liable to slip off the pedals. Scuff the soles on the rubber matting or
carpeting of the car before you start the engine. All motorists should
regularly check that their headlights, rear lights, brake lights and turn
indicators are working properly.
- Learn how to avoid and deal with aquaplaning.
Aquaplaning happens when the water in front of your tires
builds up faster than your car's weight can push it out of the way. The water
pressure causes your car to rise up and slide on a thin layer of water between
your tires and the road. At this point, your car can be completely out of
contact with the road, and you are in danger of skidding or drifting out of
your lane, or even off the road. To avoid aquaplaning, keep your tires properly
inflated, ensure that the tread non skid is above the legal limits on your
tires and replace them when necessary, slow down when roads are wet, and stay
away from puddles. Try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of
you. If you find yourself Aquaplaning, do not brake or turn suddenly. This
could throw your car into a skid. Ease your foot off the accelerator until the
car slows and you can feel the road again. If you need to brake, do so gently
with light pumping actions. If your car has ABS, then brake normally; the car's
computer will mimic a pumping action, when necessary.
- If the rain becomes too heavy, stop!
Heavy rain can overload the wiper blades, allowing an almost
continuous sheet of water to flow over the screen. When visibility is so
limited that the edges of the road or other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe
distance, it is time to pull over and wait for the rain to ease up. It is best
to stop at rest areas or other protected areas. If the roadside is your only
option, pull off as far as possible and wait until the storm passes. Keep your
headlights on and turn on your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers.
- First rains make the road very slippery.
The first rains always make the roads the most difficult to
drive on, as the mud and oil on the dry road combines with the water and forms
a rather slippery layer. Drivers are likely to experience reduced control, and
are cautioned to be extra careful for the first half-hour after it begins to
rain.
- Cloudy weather reduces visibility.
Use extra caution when passing other vehicles.
Dry your brakes after driving through standing water.
If you have driven through standing water deep enough to get
your brake shoes wet, apply the brakes lightly to dry them.
- Don't drive while fatigued.
Stop at least every couple of hours or every hundred miles

Why is Buying Used/Tokunbo Tyres a Safety Risk?
It
is not good to buy used tyres because they are often filled with temporary
sealant. Tyres that have been used for more than 6 years have high possibility
of tread separation while on the road, resulting in fatal accidents than often
lead to death. You cannot deny the fact that a second-hand tyre may have had
punctures, suffered wear and tear, ozone cracking, cuts and loss of air
pressure due to weight imbalance. Even improper storage of the tyres can
contribute to deterioration. Ideally, a tyre must not be used more than 6 years
and you just bought a used tyre that you have no idea how long it had been in
use for.
You might as well go and pick up some from a tyre graveyard, and end
up in your own. Over a period of time, a tyre loses its ability to create friction
on road. This means that it will take longer for your car to decelerate after
you have applied breaks. It also means that your car's fate is unpredictable
during monsoons. This was the exact reason why a tyre-manufacturing giant like
Bridgestone Americas Tyre Operations LLC suddenly decided to discontinue the
sale of its second-hand tyres.
As
you may have noticed in the case of a regular rubber-band, its chemical and
physical properties change over a period of time. It loses its elasticity and
becomes loose. The exact phenomenon takes place with tyres even though they may
not have been used for a long time. They wear and tear naturally over a period
of time. When you buy a used tyre, you will break the chain between the tyre
manufacturer and the owner of the tyre under whose name it is registered. This
will keep you uninformed in an event that these tyres are recalled. It is a
fact that most accidents caused from a tyre failure are mainly due to
separation of tread from loss of adequate adhesion between the steel and rubber
in radial tyres.
Insist on new tyres to protect yourself and your family. At xpress tyres, we sell only brand new tyres. We offer competitive price for passenger car, suv, van and
truck tyres by the leading names including Dunlop, GoodYear, Michelin,
Pirelli, Bridgestone, Firestone and Continental. SMS ur size to +2347011311444
